Te Whare o Nui is an initiative that Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa have implemented. It runs out of Mihi School every Wednesday evening and is offered to all tamariki who whakapapa to the iwi. As an agreement with the school, the iwi have allowed all students of Mihi School to attend.
On average we have 24 students participating from around the Reporoa area. This brings in whanau who are past students of the school and helps to rebuild the relationship and connection that was once lost.
For the first time, Mihi School held a Matariki Whanau Hangi evening. A lot of preparation and organisation went into it. Originally there were 100 tickets for sale, this was upped to 120. Food was donated by school whanau a week prior to the event. The local iwi helped source someone who could provide and oversee the ground preparation. Students had to sell 10 tickets per household if they were able to.
Initially, there wasn't going to be a cost, but selling the tickets for a low $5 each was a good way to cover any costs, affordable for whanau to come together, and also put a little in the school fundraising account.
Next year we are aiming for 200 tickets.
